RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Water and Wastewater

Access to clean water and functioning wastewater facilities is often taken for granted in the United States, and disruption of these services due to natural disaster creates significant post-disaster impacts.  Flooding and drought, among other natural hazards and climate-change-influenced events, often devastate these critical  facilities, with dire consequences for human health.

GZA’s scientists and engineers have a great deal of experience with water and wastewater facilities, and the firm provides Natural Hazard Mitigation and Resilience services , including:

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Transportation Infrastructure

Damage to roads, bridges and tunnels creates devastating post-disaster consequences, particularly impacting recovery efforts.  While transportation infrastructure is designed to meet robust seismic requirements, it is often highly vulnerable to flooding and the long-term effects of climate change.

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Contaminated Sites

Contaminated properties, Superfund sites, brownfields, and landfills are often located within flood hazard zones and may have been designed without consideration for long-term challenges from climate change and sea level rise. When impacted by natural disaster, particularly flooding, these sites can experience the uncontrolled release of polluted soil, water, and groundwater; sludge; non-aqueous phase liquids; and/or vapor. The resulting, toxic conditions pose dire risks to human health and the environment.

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Real Estate

The percentage of the U.S. population living in high risk hazard zones, particularly those areas susceptible to flooding, is expected to increase 140% by the end of the century.  More than ever, real estate development of homes, schools, institutions, government, commercial, and industrial facilities within natural hazard zones requires special design and construction measures.  A property risk management strategy should consider the long-term risk and balance capital investment, insurance and residual risk.

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Industry

Preventing loss, maintaining business continuity,  reducing financial liability, and protecting your employees – even when facilities are impacted by natural disasters -- are critical functions of successful industry management.

In addition to the full range of environmental, ecological and engineering services that GZA provides to clients in the industrial sector, our Natural Hazard and Mitigation and Resilience services include::

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - FEMA Public Assistance and Grant Application Support

Securing critical funding for disaster support activities – for post-disaster repair, restoration or hazard mitigation – is becoming increasingly important as the United States grapples with long-term consequences of climate change and sea level rise.  Major funding sources include the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF); Flood Mitigation Assistance grants (FMA); and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG).

RECOVERY AND REBUILDING - Oil and Gas

Disruption to oil and gas facilities after a disaster has far-reaching implications for human health, the environment, the economy, and recovery efforts.  Oil and gas facilities are critical, lifeline infrastructures, yet they are quite vulnerable to natural hazards, in particular flooding, high wind and earthquake.

GZA has provided a full suite of services to the oil and gas industry for many years, and the  Natural Hazard Mitigation and Resilience services most relevant to this sector include:
