GZA provides integrated services to assist the utility industry in the management of its environmental liabilities associated with remediation of former manufactured gas plants (MGPs). Our services include: problem identification; site characterization; risk assessment; remedial design and implementation and other value-added services.

Many of the wastes generated during the manufacturing of gas contained substances which are now recognized as hazardous, including some chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer. Various chemicals are frequently found in soils associated with wastes at former MGPs including: volatile organic compounds (VOCs); phenolics; polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); complex cyanides; thiocyanates; metals; ammoniates; nitrates and sulfates/sulfides. MGP site remediation must address the risk of exposure to these compounds. Remediation of MGP sites may be complicated by the presence of both light and dense non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs & DNAPLs) typically migrating at different speeds/directions and requiring different treatment technologies.
