In the course of investigating and remediating a contaminated property, the opportunity may arise to establish responsibility for an historical discharge to the environment – in other words, who did it and when – if you know what to look for, in which case the costs of both the investigation and the remediation can often be recovered from the responsible parties. Environmental forensics is the application of scientific methods to determine the source and age of contaminants. Investigations involve two sources of information: the documentary record and the site specific data collected during an investigation, including the analysis of samples collected in the field.
