Closures of solid waste facilities present both challenges and opportunities for owners. While some of these facilities have been developed to their permitted limits, others have additional capacity - the use of which can potentially be negotiated with regulatory agencies to offset closure costs. Still others can be developed after closure as "brownfields sites" subsequent to closure. GZA has provided closure services for numerous solid waste facilities, from simple municipal "dumps" to complex commercial facilities. We also bring proven experience and technical expertise needed to engineer closed facilities into retail, industrial, and even municipal developments.
GZA has over two decades of experience assisting clients in closing or redeveloping facilities and sites that are environmentally impaired. By combining our geotechnical and environmental capabilities, we assist our clients in managing risks associated with subsurface contamination. Our solutions typically involve a synergistic coupling of geotechnical systems with the remedial requirements for the site. Closure-related services GZA provides include:
- Closure and remedial investigations
- Feasibility studies
- Risk assessments
- Remedial design and construction
- Closure design and permitting
- Site (Brownfields) redevelopment
- Post-closure monitoring and maintenance
