GZA has worked on urban tunnel projects continuously for the past 35 years.  The company has provided geotechnical and environmental services on tunnel and mining contracts in New York, Boston, Ohio, and Providence, exceeding $17B in constructed value.  Other locations where GZA has provided geotechnical and/or environmental services associated with subway, wastewater, utility, water tunnels and nuclear waste caverns in tunnels include Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Detroit, Illinois, Seattle, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, New Mexico, Washington State, Nevada and Taiwan.

Example projects include GZA’s work on the Second Avenue Subway Tunnel in New York, design of the Consolidated Edison First Avenue Steam Tunnel, construction of the North Dorchester Bay CSO Storage Tunnel in Boston, Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer in Columbus, Ohio, the No. 7 Line Subway Extension in New York as well as pre-bid design services for the Port of Miami tunnel in Florida and the SR99 tunnel in Seattle.  GZA also provided geotechnical/tunnel design on the Third Catskill and Delaware Aqueduct for the New York City DEP which involved tunnel construction in limestone and shale.
