The Transition to ISO 14001:2026: What to Know
Expected in April 2026, ISO 14001:2026 will update the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). Whether you’re ISO certified, considering certification, or just want to be “ISO-like,” here’s what you should know about the new standard.
What is the focus of ISO 14001:2026?
The standard will focus on strengthening climate resilience and increasing environmental accountability across the value chain.
Which Clauses will be updated for the new standard?
There are changes to Clauses 4 through 10 of the standard, with clauses 4, 6, and 8 receiving the most substantial revisions:
- Clause 4 – Emphasizes the development and use of credible environmental information and strengthening the quality of environmental data.
- Clause 6 – Provides guidance for more rigorous planning, particularly a new Management of Change (MOC) process similar to the ISO 9001 and 450001 standards.
- Clause 8 – Strengthens the requirement for engagement and controls for downstream stakeholders, requiring more collaboration and oversight.
A full memo detailing these changes is available upon request .
What is the best timeline to maintain my ISO 14001 certification?
The best time to conform with the new standard is CY2026 so that you can be prepared for an ISO update audit in 2027 or 2028. Normally ISO will allow for three years for all ISO registrations to be updated to the new standard.
