Proposed Well #17 is located approximately 450 feet north of current Production Well #14; the Nantucket Water Department proposes to utilize it as an additional Production Well to meet the water supply needs of its customers and to provide needed supply resiliency. The proposed water withdrawal for the new source is not to exceed 1,440,000 gallons per day (GPD). The production well will be connected to the existing water distribution infrastructure on the property. The proposed new pump house (will be less than 1,000 square feet in size) will be constructed at the well location, and a new pipe connection (less than 100ft in length) will be constructed to connect the pump house to the existing 12-in diameter main distribution line located within the existing gravel roadway.
Trucks and construction traffic will access the site from the Town via Polpis Road and will not pass through residential neighborhoods.
Only very minor re-grading will be required along the existing grassed areas and existing gravel road for the construction of the new pipeline. The surface area circumventing the pump house area will be restored to pre-existing conditions after construction has been completed. The water distribution infrastructure on the property will be upgraded to utilize the additional groundwater. Other than the new connection to the water main and pump house, alterations will be limited to the existing developed area used by existing infrastructure.
No detrimental impacts from the project have been identified. The project will benefit all citizens of Nantucket by providing a sustainable potable groundwater supply source that produces water having excellent quality that is free of PFAS or other contaminants. The well is located on a property already owned by the Town of Nantucket and will have no impact on the local environment.
