GZA conducted geotechnical engineering and construction-phase soils engineering services to support the development of a new 71,250-square-foot, two-story data center.

Challenge

The project site presented several subsurface challenges, including areas of uncontrolled historic fill, variable soil conditions, a former stormwater pipe within the building footprint, and localized soft soils that could adversely affect foundation and slab performance.

Solution

GZA conducted subsurface investigations and evaluated historic geotechnical data to identify areas requiring remediation. The team recommended targeted test pit explorations and developed an earthwork strategy that included the removal of uncontrolled fill, verification of native soil conditions, and replacement with engineered compacted fill. During construction, GZA provided on-site observation and testing services, overseeing fill removal and replacement operations, evaluation of foundation subgrades, removal of the original underground infrastructure, and placement of slab-support fill. Field density testing indicated that engineered fill met project compaction requirements.

This approach allowed the team to reuse suitable on-site materials, manage groundwater and soft soil conditions, and establish stable foundation and floor slab support across the building footprint.

Benefit

By identifying and addressing subsurface risks before construction, GZA helped reduce uncertainty and supported efficient construction operations, minimizing unforeseen schedule and cost impacts.
