Challenge

At the request of a developer and in response to observed sound levels and complaints from neighbors, GZA performed a post-construction acoustic evaluation and collected background and operational sound pressure measurements to assess the as-built noise impacts and sound sources from a data center, including extensive sound pressure measurements from mechanical infrastructure, i.e., diesel‑fired emergency generators, chillers, and rooftop HVAC systems.

Solution

GZA conducted multi day noise monitoring at three locations along the project boundary and documented that ambient noise levels had increased after construction of the data center as compared to GZA’s daytime and nighttime baseline conditions which were established prior to construction. GZA also conducted sound pressure level measurements of the equipment in use at the developed data center in general accordance with ISO 3745 guidance. A comparison was made between manufacturer noise data used in the pre-construction model and the post-construction readings taken on-site. Using measured sound power and directivity data, GZA developed updated acoustic models to evaluate how real world equipment performance compared to original design assumptions and manufacturer specifications. GZA evaluated measured sound levels against local noise limits, USEPA long term exposure guidance, and National Hearing Conservation Association perceptibility thresholds to distinguish regulatory compliance from community experience.

Benefit

GZA confirmed that measured sound levels generally fell within the range predicted by pre construction modeling, while also identifying where manufacturer specifications underestimated actual operational noise. The post construction report delivered transparent, third party verification to support regulatory engagement, internal decision making, and community outreach. GZA’s work demonstrates continuity from baseline monitoring and predictive modeling through post construction verification, facilitating management of acoustic performance through planning, construction, and commissioning.
