A facility functions as our client’s operations headquarters and center for storm response. In September 2022, the municipality experienced a high intensity 100-year storm event. The facility experienced flooding from combined sewer system and roof drain leader system backups within buildings. Due to the widespread water damage, the client retained contractors to perform moisture testing, demolition of damaged materials, and restoration of impacted areas. GZA provided construction management, insurance reporting support, material sampling, air monitoring as needed, camera survey of on Site drainage lines, and guidance on PCB material impacts on Site.
Challenge
The Site is state and federally mandated to perform PCB remediation due to the presence of PCB contaminated asphalt, soil, and concrete. Due to the widespread contamination, PCB impacts are also present in building materials across select areas. Additionally, the extent of water damages prompted an insurance claim submittal. This required detailed documentation of impacts and response work.
Solution
Before demolition, GZA performed PCB and/or asbestos sampling of building materials within storm affected areas. GZA assisted the contractors with material management during the demolition activities. During demolition, GZA tracked personnel on Site, drying equipment in use, and square footage of water-damaged materials removed in each room for insurance tracking purposes.
Benefit
Utilizing GZA’s experience with construction management and familiarity with the facility’s layout, utilities, and PCB-impacts, we were able to assist with ensuring the work was well documented, facility drainage lines were inspected with damages addressed, and demolition of materials followed proper management protocols. Ultimately, an insurance claim was successfully settled by the client following this work.
