The South Street Landing redevelopment transformed a formerly inaccessible industrial shoreline into one of Providence's premier public waterfront destinations. As part of this effort, GZA's waterfront improvements supported the creation of a continuous riverfront promenade that reconnects the Jewelry District with the Providence River and expands public access to the water's edge. The project enhanced approximately 1,000 linear feet of waterfront through new and rehabilitated pedestrian walkways, upgraded boardwalk sections, repaired public access landings, and improved connections to adjacent riverfront destinations. These improvements helped establish a seamless waterfront experience that encourages walking, recreation, and engagement with the river while supporting the broader vision of the Urban Coastal Greenway.

Challenge

The South Street Landing site occupied a prominent stretch of the Providence River but was historically dedicated to industrial uses associated with the former power station. Existing waterfront infrastructure was deteriorated, fragmented, and unable to support the public access, connectivity, and placemaking objectives envisioned for the redevelopment. A key project goal was creating an attractive and accessible waterfront environment that could reconnect the community to the river and link emerging riverfront destinations within Providence's Innovation and Design District.

Solution

Working as part of the larger redevelopment team, GZA helped facilitate the transformation of the waterfront edge into a publicly accessible riverwalk environment. Improvements included reconstruction of aging boardwalk segments, rehabilitation of public access landings and gangways, installation of new waterfront overlooks and pedestrian amenities, and integration of the shoreline with the broader public realm improvements occurring throughout South Street Landing. The revitalized waterfront creates a direct and inviting connection between the development, Point Street, the Providence River, and the expanding Urban Coastal Greenway network, while providing opportunities for gathering, recreation, and waterfront enjoyment.

Benefit

Today, the project serves as a critical link in Providence's evolving riverfront network. The enhanced walkways, waterfront landings, boardwalks, and pedestrian connections transformed an underutilized industrial shoreline into an active public destination that supports recreation, mobility, and economic development. By improving access to the Providence River and strengthening connections between downtown, the Innovation District, South Street Landing, and adjacent parks and open spaces, the project contributes to the city's long-term vision of a vibrant, walkable, and connected waterfront.
