Challenge
GZA provides the City of Springfield, Massachusetts with stormwater management services encompassing civil and geotechnical engineering, landscape architecture, and construction-phase services.
Solution
Some representative stormwater management projects are described below.
Parks and Open Space – GZA has provided civil engineering and landscape architecture for improvements to multiple parks and helped the City obtain state and federal grants to fund the work. Projects paired park upgrades with stormwater rehabilitation and new systems to treat runoff and address water quality before discharge to surface waters. GZA designed and oversaw installation of low impact strategies such as rain gardens, subsurface groundwater recharge systems, retention basins, and bioswales. GZA has also designed infiltration systems for numerous City parks to dispose of runoff from water-spray play facilities and designed a stormwater treatment system for the Forest Park Zoo.
Public Schools – GZA designed stormwater systems for several Springfield public schools. Services included reconnaissance, drainage evaluations, test pits and soil borings to assess subsurface conditions, followed by development of alternatives and design solutions meeting City Department of Public Works and Springfield Water stormwater management requirements.
Drainage Repairs at Other City-Owned Properties – For repair of municipal drainage facilities at Dickinson Street, GZA investigated existing conditions throughout video inspection of 2,500 linear feet of storm drain and by completing hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. GZA then designed cost-effective improvements, including infrastructure repair/replacement, structural Best Management Practices (BMPs) to address stormwater total suspended solids (TSS), culvert replacements where necessary, and installation of lining systems for corroded metal pipes in areas with limited access.
