GZA Supports New Geotechnical Lab at Wentworth Institute of Technology

NORWOOD, Mass. – May 14, 2019 -- GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. (GZA), a leading, multi-disciplinary firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services, announced today that it has supported a new geotechnical lab in Wentworth Institute of Technology’s Center for Engineering, Innovation and Sciences.

The labs in this new, state-of-the-art academic building provide fundamental, core content for the civil engineering profession through hands-on, practical experience for students.

“GZA has a long, strong tradition of supporting educational advancement for the geotechnical community,” said Pat Sheehan, CEO of GZA. “Many of our geotechnical staff have benefited from a Wentworth education, and supporting the creation of a geotechnical lab allows us to continue that tradition.”

“GZA’s support ensures that Wentworth continues to be responsive to the learning styles of current and future students and will prepare our graduates to be more prepared to adapt to the changing nature and emerging challenges in the civil engineering profession,” said Jack Duggan, Chairperson of the Civil Engineering Department.

Support for the lab was created with the help of Michael Powers, a GZA employee of 45 years and graduate of Wentworth’s associate degree program. He went on to receive a B.S. and an M.S. in civil engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Based in GZA’s Providence office, Powers has been an integral part of the company’s geotechnical practice.

“It was Wentworth that started me thinking as an engineer. Supporting the Geotechnical Laboratory was an opportunity neither GZA nor I could let pass by,” said Powers.
